This might be the funniest show I have ever seen.

You should order your tickets for The Producers ASAP, I have a feeling this is going to be one of the Canyon Theatre Guild's most popular shows EVER.  And you want to get a good view of Joe Miele and David Kenny as they make brilliantly ridiculous fools of themselves in the Mel Brooks masterpiece.

"Be My Baby" and "Tom Sawyer"

Last weekend, I watched two great shows: "Be My Baby" by Ken Ludwig, and a musical adaptation of Tom Sawyer.


Ken Ludwig is a master of comedic mix-up and good-natured mayhem. Although Noises Off by Michael Frayn is my all-time favorite farce-set-in-a-theater, Ludwig's comedies are a close runner up with mad-cap plays such as Leading Ladies and Lend Me a Tenor.

  Although there are lots of laughs, the script also blends in family drama. The story follows the misadventures of two elderly rivals, a gruff Scotsman and a matronly Londoner. They have been entrusted with a very special task: To travel to America and bring back an adopted baby. Unfortunately, once they arrive, the courts won't sign the custody papers, so they are stranded in San Francisco for weeks on end.
You might be able to guess where this is going. These two curmudgeons become the best of friends when they discover a common love: the baby that they must now care for.

Be My Baby has a lot of charm, and not to mention six top-notch actors! 

Now, if you're looking for a great show for kids and grown-ups alike, check out Tom Sawyer.  My girls and I enjoyed Tom Sawyer.  The child actors are very entertaining, and the sets were terrific, especially the dark cave setting of the play's climax.  This is Jeff Johnson's first director's gig at the Canyon Theatre Guild.  He's off to a great start.  I can't wait to see what he directs next!

RENT is the theatrical sensation, composed by the late Jonathan Larson, and winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical.

If you have seen the show before, you will definitely want to see Santa Clarita's young talented artists as they bare their souls upon the stage, singing some of the rawest, most heartfelt songs ever written.  And if you have never seen RENT before, what are you waiting for?!  The last performances are this Friday and Saturday (March 19th and 20th)

RENT - "No Day But Today"

The Canyon Theatre Guild / Santa Clarita Regional Theatre production of Jonathan Larson's musical RENT is... is... oh, you pick your favorite adjective: phenomenal, outstanding, remarkable, amazing. Many people who have heard a little bit about this rock-musical based upon La Boheme have the misconception that RENT is dark and depressing. But when they watch the show, they are amazed to discover how life-affirming the storyline is. Every song is laced with hope and compassion.

Now, I have been a "Rent Head" (a devoted fan of the show) since I first heard the soundtrack. I had the honor of watching the original Broadway cast -- an astounding group of young performers, many of whom have gone on to develop impressive careers. (For example, the original Maureen from RENT went on to play Elphaba in the Broadway production of WICKED.) I am proud to say that our young cast of RENT has achieved a professional level of theatrical excellence. They have raised the bar for future Santa Clarita productions. I am certain that many of the cast members of our regional theatre's RENT will have shining careers in the arts.
